The World Architecture News (WAN) Awards is recognised as the world’s largest architectural awards program. This year, it received a total of 1,379 entries from 72 different countries, evaluated by a panel of 317 international judges. ARRCC, a South African interior design studio, has recently gained global recognition for its gold win in this year’s WAN Awards Edition.
Wave Villa, the winning home located in Cape Town South Africa, won Gold in the Residence Under 10,000 m² Category, standing alongside design giants like Foster + Partners and NBBJ.
Situated at the foot of Lion’s Head, the home’s sculptural roof design feature inspired the project’s name. Its undulating form, inspired by the natural landscape, floats above the steel framework and draws in views of the surrounding mountains, and enriching the connection with the environment.
“There is a strong sense of visual connectedness, with the beauty of the surrounding context being highly appreciable and inspiring. It’s clear that the residents deeply value their engagement with nature.” says WAN Awards judge.
ARRCC’s winning design approach focused on reimagining the space by retaining the home’s existing footprint while remodelling the envelope and interior to create an open plan design. This incorporated a blend of function and aesthetic, utilising natural materials and creating a flowing structure that harmonizes with the surroundings.
“The floating, wave-inspired roof design is the project’s unique selling point, symbolising the home’s integration with the landscape and acting as a focal feature in modern architectural design’’, says ARRCC Director Jon Case. ARRCC’s iconic farmhouse-inspired home, Winelands Villa, also received a Residential Category win in the WAN EMEA division of this award last year.
