First Graphene and Glade Chemicals launch PureGRAPH®-enhanced waterproofing additive, boosting concrete durability and sustainability.

South Africa’s cement and concrete market has just welcomed a significant innovation. First Graphene Limited (ASX: FGR) has announced the launch of a groundbreaking waterproofing additive infused with PureGRAPH®, now available locally through high-performance construction chemicals producer Glade Chemicals Manufacturers CC.

The new graphene-enhanced waterproofing additive, KR2-Tech Dry, marks the first commercial use of its kind in southern Africa, introducing next-generation durability and sustainability to the construction sector.

Building Stronger, Smarter Concrete

Following trials conducted in 2024–25, the additive demonstrated a step-change in performance, significantly improving the long-term durability of ready-mix concrete. Compared to traditional mixtures, PureGRAPH® formulations reduced secondary water absorption by more than 17.4% at 28 days and 48% at 400 days of curing.

The trials, conducted in partnership with Stellenbosch University, AFRIMAT Ltd., Melt Wahl Concrete Services, and Kindling Inc., also showed a reduction in oxygen penetration by nearly 19%, translating to improved structural longevity and enhanced corrosion resistance for reinforced concrete.

Innovation Meets Commercial Impact

“First Graphene’s entrance into the South African construction materials market represents the rising prominence of our PureGRAPH® product and the range of benefits it provides to the global cement and concrete industry,” says Michael Bell, Managing Director and CEO of First Graphene Limited.

“Initial orders secured by Glade Chemicals deliver both a boost to our bottom line and new opportunities to expand our presence into an emerging market.”

The project’s success underscores a growing awareness of graphene’s role in creating longer-lasting, more sustainable concrete, offering advanced waterproofing and barrier properties for reinforced structures.

Collaboration in Action

The large-scale field trial, conducted on an 11m x 11m concrete slab at Bontebok Ridge Reserve in Wellington, confirmed PureGRAPH®’s seamless integration into existing production processes.

Its simple dispersion method ensures that ready-mix producers can incorporate the additive without costly process changes, while still achieving substantial performance improvements.

Trial data has since been shared with key industry stakeholders, highlighting the commercial potential of graphene-based waterproofing solutions.

Towards a Sustainable Future

For First Graphene, this marks not only a technical milestone but also a meaningful expansion into Africa’s construction ecosystem. The company plans to leverage Glade’s success by exploring export opportunities, including the potential introduction of KR2-Tech Dry to the Australian market.

By combining scientific innovation with industry collaboration, First Graphene is redefining the standards of strength, resilience, and sustainability in modern concrete manufacturing.
