AfriSam’s long-standing commitment to excellence and innovation in the built environment was once again underscored at the 24th Construction World Best Projects Awards, where several projects using its construction materials were recognised for outstanding achievement.
As one of the founding supporters of the awards, AfriSam also sponsors the AfriSam Innovation Award for Sustainable Construction, recognising the importance of driving sustainability and best practice within South Africa’s construction industry.
Celebrating Engineering Excellence
This year, multiple landmark projects built with AfriSam materials were honoured for their contribution to infrastructure, sustainability, and technical achievement — including the Malmesbury Bypass, the Market Road Bridge in Pietermaritzburg, and Oxford Parks Block 2A Phase 1 in Johannesburg.
“These awards reflect the exceptional partnerships and quality that AfriSam brings to South Africa’s construction landscape,” says Richard Tomes, AfriSam Sales and Marketing Executive. “Seeing projects that incorporate our materials being recognised is a source of pride and proof of the consistency and innovation behind every delivery.”

H&I’s Malmesbury Bypass – Special Mention
Constructed by H&I in the Western Cape, the Malmesbury Bypass received a Special Mention for its contribution to strategic infrastructure development under the National Infrastructure Plan 2050, with a focus on the Saldanha–Northern Cape Development Corridor.
Started in March 2023 and scheduled for completion in January 2026, the project includes 6.7 km of new road, multiple bridges, ramps and an agricultural underpass designed to improve safety and traffic flow.
AfriSam supplied a range of aggregates and readymix concrete from its Rheebok Quarry, located north of Malmesbury, and its Peninsula facility, with over 14,000 m³ of concrete used in five post-tensioned twin-rib deck bridges and ancillary works.
The project’s complexity — including extensive cut-and-fill operations and river crossings — highlights the engineering precision and material quality required for high-performance road infrastructure.

Teichmann Structures’ Market Road Bridge, Pietermaritzburg – Special Mention
The Market Road Bridge in KwaZulu-Natal, constructed by Teichmann Structures under the Grinaker LTA New England Joint Venture for SANRAL, earned a Special Mention for precision planning and execution.
AfriSam supplied 1,300 m³ of readymix concrete for the 103-metre bridge deck, which was poured continuously over a single night in April 2025. A total of 218 truckloads were completed between 20:00 and 06:00, without a single delay or incident.
This milestone pour, part of the broader N3 highway upgrade, demonstrated world-class logistical coordination and quality assurance — essential for maintaining one of South Africa’s most critical freight corridors.
Concor’s Oxford Parks Block 2A Phase 1 – Highly Commended and Special Mention
In Johannesburg, Concor’s Oxford Parks Block 2A Phase 1 received a Highly Commended Award in the Building Contractors Category and a Special Mention in the AfriSam Innovation Award for Sustainable Construction.
The development serves as a benchmark for sustainable urban building, showcasing energy efficiency, responsible material sourcing, and environmentally conscious design that aligns with Green Building Council principles.
AfriSam’s low-carbon cementitious products and innovative concrete solutions played a key role in meeting the project’s sustainability objectives.
A Legacy of Innovation and Sustainability
For over two decades, AfriSam’s partnership with the Construction World Best Projects Awards has championed forward-thinking approaches that drive innovation in South Africa’s construction sector.
“AfriSam has supported the awards from the beginning because we believe in recognising excellence that uplifts the industry,” says Tomes. “Our sponsorship of the Innovation Award continues to inspire sustainable practices and long-term progress across the built environment.”
